Motorhomes

A modern alternative to traditional caravan model are motorhomes, sometimes known as the camper vans or recreational vehicles (RV). Motorhomes differ from caravans as they are built into or around a car or truck design, rather than having to be towed as a separate unit behind a vehicle. Many of the upmarket RVs are now so high-tech that they can be used year-round as permanent accommodation. Conversely the budget designs can be a novel solution for people who find themselves constantly on the road - with the bed, bathroom and kitchen contained within the vehicle, clocking-off for the night is as simple as pulling the car or SUV over to the side of the road.

Micro Motorhomes

There are five main types or classifications of motorhome, with each type having a range of features and associated costs. The smallest and cheapest option is known as a 'micro' motorhome and is basically modelled on the design of a small car or van. The roof of a 'micro' model can be elevated to increase the vertical space, though in general this type of motorhome is really only suited for a single occupant. Car models that can be converted or manufactured to include a motorhome set-up include the Fiat Doblo and Scudo, the Peugeot Partner and the Citroen Dispatch.

Dismountable Motorhomes

The next model type, slightly larger than the 'micro' design, is known as the 'dismountable'. These types of vehicles are far more popular in the United States than they are in Europe and the United Kingdom. The design features a living unit that can be detached from the SUV that tows it, providing a good solution for people who want to be able to use the car independently of the living quarters.

Panel Van Conversion Motorhomes

The three largest designs of motorhome are by far the most popular. Beginning with the 'panel van conversion' type, which sees the use of a panel van vehicle that has been converted (perhaps with an elevating or pop-up roof) into a motorhome, there is a marked increase in both space and amenities offered

Coach-Built Motorhomes

Larger and more comprehensive than the conversion model is the 'coach-built' design, a motorhome that has been purposefully built around a vehicle with the sole purpose of providing a portable place of accommodation. These models are sometimes known as 'Lutons' and are the most popular type of motorhome, with the only down side being that the living area cannot be detached from the vehicle that supports it.

A-Class Motorhomes

The final type, used only by dedicated motorhome enthusiasts, is the 'A-Class' van or truck, essentially a trailer on wheels that can be as long as a bus and have two levels. These designs usually see the living area undivided from the driver and passenger section, meaning that the front seats can be turned around when the vehicle is stationary to provide extra seating if needed.

Motorhome Insurance

Motorhomes are prime targets for burglary, especially those that are in the upper echelons of both budget and design. For this reason it is important that you invest in a sound insurance policy and take any security measures necessary to protect your vehicle. Motor disablers, pedal covers and detachable steering wheels are popular options.
